Heading to a local lake this weekend? Know before you go!

Currently, there are no advisories at local lakes, but our team did see cyanobacteria forming at Vancouver Lake’s flushing channel. We’ll continue to monitor, and if a bloom forms we will collect water samples to test for toxins.

Possible benthic algae mats have also been spotted along the Columbia River shoreline at Cottonwood Beach in Washougal. While no illnesses have been reported, the algae looks similar to the algae that caused a dog’s death in October. We posted signs about benthic algae mats at boat launches and marinas along the Columbia River last fall, and as a precaution, this week we posted signs at Cottonwood Beach.

When recreating in or along local rivers or lakes, be sure to watch for algal blooms and benthic mats. They may have toxins that are harmful to people and pets.

If you see floating scum or chunks of algae material:

• Keep kids away from floating scum and do not let them touch or put algae in their mouths.

• Do not let dogs eat clumps of scum or algae, and do not let them go into or drink the water.

Make it a habit to check our website for the latest information on advisories before recreating in local waters: clark.wa.gov/public-health/public-beaches.
